Guillaume van der Brugghen was a painter and draftsman who specialised in depicting animals but also produced some portraits and landscapes with a keen eye for the natural form and with a fine and detailed technique.
He was born in Nijmegen on 2nd November 1811 and became a pupil of the landscape and animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776-1839) in The Hague. In oils, he portrayed several dog paintings such as “King Charles Puppy”, “Dog on Chair” – both in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amserdam - “Pointer” “Lurchers ready for the Hunt” and “Bear Hunt” as well as some farmyard scenes such as “Young Boy and Dogs by a Stable”. There is also a still life of Wood Pigeon in the Rijksmuseum.
The Rijksmuseum has some other oils by him in its collection also together with over one hundred drawings and pastels which include depictions of leopards, lions, dogs, deer, cats, birds such as emu and heron, landscapes, portraits and still life of fruit and dead game.
He died in Ubbergen on 18th June 1891.
