This 19th century French landscape painter was born in Valenciennes on 8th March 1834 and did his artistic training under the history, genre and landscape painter Hubert Joseph Potiers and the Parisian marine painter Jean Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879).
Mascart exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1880 and although he produced some landscapes, it is as a painter of cityscapes and harbours and ports that he is best known. His work is typical of the northern French landscape tradition and he was one of the early members of a group that came to be known as the “Montmartre Painters” who specialised in recording the bustling city streets and include titles such as: “Moulin de la Galette”, and “La Pointe de l`île Saint-Louis,” “La Plage à Trouville,” and “Moulin Rouge, Paris”. He also travelled and worked in Belgium, Holland and Italy painting subjects in Dordrecht, Amsterdam, Ghent and Como among others.
His work can be seen in the museums of Saintes with “Vue prise à Huy-sur-Meuse” and Bernay “Vue de Grand Meuse”.
