Born in Kaunes in Lithuania, part of the old Soviet Union, on 19th November 1908, Arbit Blatas was a pupil in a special Soviet school in Russia which was open to children who displayed artistic talent.

He exhibited his first paintings in Lithuania in 1933 and next in Germany where he had been studying at the Berlin Academy. It was also at about this time that he moved to Paris and he came to establish himself as a ‘French’ artist painting principally views on the banks of the Seine.

Between 1940 and 1948 he was resident in the United States and exhibited in various venues which resulted in a number of museums acquiring his work and some of these can be seen in New York at both the Metropolitan and the Museum of Modern Art, and at Pittsburg.

Over his career he established a firm reputation as a Neo-Impressionist producing not only landscapes but also interiors and still-life.

Other museums around the world holding paintings by him include: Lausanne (Musée des Beaux Arts), Grenoble, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Paris at La Musée de Jeu de Paume and La Musée de l’Orangerie.
