Mallebranche was born in Caens on 3 September 1790. He was a painter and lithographer who worked with the genre and history painter Pierre Nolasque Bergeret, who had himself studied under David, and also with Joseph Eusebe Prevot who painted scenes of the Seine and the surrounding landscape of Paris.
He showed at the Paris Salon between 1812 and 1838, and exhibited in Luxembourg in 1830. Mallebranche's specialty was autumn and winter scene and, in particular, the depiction of snow effects.
Museums where examples of his work can be seen include Versailles, 'Military Convoy, effect of Snow and Sun,' Niort, 'Winter in the Pyrennes,' Nice, 'Snow Effect, Bernay, 'Winter Landscape.'
Mallebranche died in Caens 4th November 1838
