A Springer Spaniel with Partridge
Born in Dendermonde on 1 November 1828, Cunaeus studied at the Amsterdam Academy and was a pupil of the Amsterdam portrait, genre and history painter, Nicolaas Pienaman.
Cunaeus became an accomplished animal and genre painter and is particularly well known for his dog paintings with his acute observation and highly finished technique. He rarely used deep, rich colours instead blended white into his palette to create a soft, somewhat diffused effect in his paintings.
Two of his works can be seen in the Amsterdam Museum "Friends of the Hunt" and "The Two Friends".
