John Barker, like his contemporary, John Gifford, who painted in a similar style, specialised in gun dogs with game. Occasionally, he has also included ponies and a ghillie. Landseer was interested in this subject matter, as were renowned dog painters such as Wardle, Blinks, Woodhouse, and Hardy. Little is known about John Barker as he did not exhibit publicly, but like many other artists of this period, he probably earned his living from commission work exclusively.
Thomas Jones Barker (1815 – 1882) was a member of the Barker family of Bath. He was primarily a portraitist who did sometimes paint sporting scenes. His style and composition was very similar to that of John Barker. Some scholars therefore feel that there is a strong possibility that the two are father and son.
