Ghisolfi was one of a number of accomplished artists who excelled in painting scenes from Italy`s renowned past, a tradition that was continued through the 18th and 19th centuries with Canaletto, Marieschi and Guardi.
He was born in Milan in 1632 and would appear to have spent most of his life and career there as he died in that city in 1683 having gone blind in his later years. He did his artistic training under the important painter Salvador Rosa and apart from his works in oils, he also painted frescos in Paine, Genes, Naples and Rome.
Museums where his work can be seen include among others: Dresden (Ruins at Carthage), Edinburgh (Architectural Ruins) Hanover and Mulhouse (Ruins of the thermal baths at Caracella).
