A painter of figures, nudes, genre scenes, marines and landscapes, Liéven Herremans was born in Bruges on 17th July 1858. He studied initially at L'Académie de Brugge and then under the instruction of the animal and figure painter Charles Michel Maria Verlat at L'Académie d'Anvers between 1885 and 1886. He then travelled around Italy and stayed in Paris for a period in order to hone his technique.
He began his professional career in about 1880, establishing a reputation for his ability to capture the female nude form and was awarded a Gold Medal in Amsterdam in 1907. His works display a blend of Impressionism and Symbolism executed in a palette of soft, pastel colours.
Examples of his work can be seen in La Musée d'anvers and Dundee Art Gallery in Scotland has a study of a mule in its collection. Subjects of some of his paintings include: "Débarquement au Port", " La Fontaine", " Rue animeée", " Au Café" and Le Répas du Modèle."
