This highly regarded eighteenth century portraitist also painted historical and genre subjects.
He was born in Rees near Cleves on 28th January 1688, the son of Julius Quinkhard He pursued his artistic training under the Amsterdam painters Anold van Boonen, N. Verkolje and Chrositoph Lubienietzki who was of Polish origin.
He enjoyed considerable success in his career gaining a notable reputation and consequently produced a great number of portraits His talent also extended to mythological and allegorical subjects.
He worked in Utrecht and later Amsterdam where he also had a business as an art dealer. His son Julius, an engraver and painter, was born in Amsterdam in 1736 and Jan Maurits died there on 11 November 1772.
Museums where his work can be seen include: Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Fitzwilliam (Cambridge), Dresden, Dublin, Utrecht and Haarlem.
