Clowes paintings have a charming quality. He painted horses almost exclusively and was careful to include every physical detail and point of refinement. His subjects are boldly placed in soft landscapes and often have a sensitive expression.
Clowes spent his entire life in Chester. He had many clients in the area including the Egertons of Oulton Park, the Stanleys of Hooton Hall, the Vaughans of Nanau and the Grosvenors of Eaton Hall. `The Earl of Fitzwilliams Hunt,' painted in 1824, is one of his most important works.
Clowes married Maria Beckett in September, 1798. They had three children, two of whom, Henry and Frederick, also became equestrian subject painters.
