This artist, who was born in Amsterdam, was a very competent painter of landscapes and still lifes. He is best known as a copyist of bird painters such as the renowned Melchior de Hondecoeter. Indeed, some of his works have been confused with those of the master. Van Oolen achieved great success in his lifetime as an imitator and his paintings were highly prized.
