Born in London, Arthur Wardle was to become a much renowned painter of both domestic and wild animals. Having little formal training, Wardle studied live animals at the London Zoo. He paid particular attention to capturing the movement of animals and their latent energy. However, he is probably best known for his pictures of dogs. Although rarely painted, his hunting scenes are also of fine quality.
Wardle exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1880-1935 and Suffolk Street, showing in total 113 paintings. In addition, in 1931 Wardle had his own show at the Fine Art Society entitled "Paintings and Drawings of Big Game".
Wardle's work was reproduced on postcards and cigarette cards.
Examples of exhibited works include "Left in Charge", "Tigers Disturbed", Snow Leopards", "Study of Cattle on the Banks of the Thames" and "Got Him".
