Jacques Bertaux began his career as a pupil of Jean-Jacques Bachelier and was soon to acquire a fine reputation as a military and sporting painter. He exhibited at the Paris salon between the years 1793 and 1802.
Hunting scenes, cavalry engagements and other equine subjects were beautifully executed with a fine sense of draughtmanship and a strong use of colour. Bertaux completed a set of four hunting scenes in 1773 for Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orleans.
Examples of the artist's work can be found in Paris in the Louvre.
